Bed of Flames
Acrylic Sculpture, 2023
For this piece, I wanted to created a juxdapostiotion between the meaning of the object and the object itself. Bed of Flames was a piece created to resemble a chair, which by definition has a seat, 4 legs, and a back. The purpose of a chair is to be able to sit down to seek relief from your legs, yet if this piece where to be sat on you wouldn’t find much comfort as you would find spikes on the seat.
Bed of Flames is a 10”x16”x10” chair composed of acrylic and wood. I started off with a wood base as I assembled a chair-like structure, then glued on 1 inch acrylic pieces, piece by piece. I used 2 different types of acrylic and used a laser cutter to cut out three different shapes, squares, circles, and triangles. I used opaque acrylic as well as florescent to give more contrast between the part of the seat that would cause pain from the part that is aesthetically pleasing to the eye. It was important to me in the creation of this project to make the chair look as appealing to the eye as I could to draw people in enough to find out that it isn’t your regular comfortable chair.
